Aim For A Good Time
The Shooting Sports program teaches Scouts marksmanship and the safe handling of firearms, under the careful supervision of a director trained and certified by BSA and the National Rifle Association.
Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting merit badges are both offered at RSR, and there are open shoots each afternoon and evening for anyone who wishes to participate. Time permitting, there may also be opportunities for Scouts to attempt to qualify for the NRA Rifle Marksmanship program.
By New York State law, a Scout must be at least 12 years old to fire a rifle or shotgun.
Personal firearms are not permitted at camp.
Due to the difficulty many smaller youth have handling a shotgun, we require that Scouts be at least 13 years old and physically and mentally mature before attempting Shotgun Shooting merit badge.
Participants in Rifle and Shotgun Shooting merit badges may need to attend additional open shoots in order to meet the scoring qualifications.
Unit Leaders are encouraged to join us for open shoot and special adult-only open shoot opportunities.
